About the Author
John Hodgman is a writer, comedian, and actor. He is the author of three New York Times bestselling books—The Areas of My Expertise, More Information Than You Require, and That Is All. After an appearance to promote his books on The Daily Show, he was invited to return as a contributor, serving as the show’s “Resident Expert” and “Deranged Millionaire.” This led to an unexpected and, frankly, implausible career in front of the camera. He has performed comedy for the president of the United States, at a TED conference, and in a crypt in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. He is the host of the popular Judge John Hodgman podcast, in which he settles serious disputes between real people, such as “Is a hot dog a sandwich?” He also contributes a weekly column under the same name for The New York Times Magazine.

John Hodgman has written a very personal collection of stories from his life, and deemed them good enough to share with the world via ink appended to substrate. I have never read any of his other works, but I found this book to be very honest in it's personality, comparable to a story being told among friends at a cafe or in a restaurant. It has been my companion on the bus since I first cracked it open, and now that I am nearing the end of the book, I am saddened that this conversation is coming to a close. The bill is paid, and the wait staff is politely ignoring our coffee cups, which have long since emptied. I hope this isn't the last collection of stories that John Hodgman authors.
Hodgman's book is a brilliant writer with a gentle, subversive, and humanistic touch. He's also very funny . The stories in "Vacationland" are strung together nicely, and the emotional terrain navigated nicely -- from the slightly bizarre to the amusingly mundane to the deeply touching. He captures New England dump culture perfectly, Maine's strange blend of cold people and cold water nicely, and his own story's bumps and twists honestly. It's a great book by a satirist and memoirist I will be following from now on as a writer I respect and admire.
I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the prose that Mr. Hodgman has delivered. Perhaps I shouldn't be, as he is a Yale graduate and did study literature. The essays are moving and funny. Relatable and surprising. Somewhat biographical and revealing, I found myself wanting more. John, if you are reading this, you may have a career here. Please keep writing.

There's a masterpiece by Titian, "The Flaying of Marsyas", in which Marsyas has lost a musical battle with the god Apollo. Apollo gets to skin Marsyas alive since he lost. One interpretation of this work is that all artists leave themselves flayed alive or laid bare for us to see and judge. Hodgman certainly shows his deepest inner nature in this book, mostly judging himself before we have a chance. He is brutally honest with us, and chances are you will see yourself doing similar things and having felt similar ways as he. It's excellent and funny and you should read it.
I listened to this during a long drive to the East Coast after reading its New York Times' book review. I knew next to nothing about Hodgman, although I had seen him on TV a few times on The Daily Show. With few expectations, I was pleasantly surprised to find this book deeply funny and poignant, often simultaneously. The writing is spare but unhurried, and I easily trebled my previous knowledge of rural Massachusetts and its solid waste disposal enforcement policies. The audiobook was a delight, with Hodgman's delivery adding a subtle wryness that kept me entertained through the entirety of Pennsylvania. Highly recommend and I look forward to his next.
Unlike his other books, Hodgman gets real and personal in Vacationland, albeit with plenty of his characteristic wit. By turns insightful, melancholy, and funny. I read most of this book in the air above America, on a flight to Boston. I wanted to stay up there.
A very well written memoir full of funny anecdotes about his childhood vacationing in Western Mass. and his experiences as an adult after buying a vacation home in Maine. Besides his adventures in vacationing, there are lots of other stories about growing up, his wife and children, and his neighbors who turn out to not be monsters after all. I enjoyed this book a lot and highly recommend it.
