Very general, low key, basic basic read with such common sense recommendations ...... great disappointment as the title is awesome! If the book was going to be a very general, low skill, style book then I wish this was emphasized on the cover.
This is an enjoyable and useful book. It's for all ages but I found it so helpful I bought copies for my friends. It's written so all ca n follow and make use of the advise. It's not at all dull or preachy as some self help books are and it helped me embrace my age with joy and not despair!
This book is really designed to be read at any age and really helps you understand how to look at life as you go through it. It really surpassed my expectations and I’m giving it as Christmas gifts this year.
A nice read.
This has been a year of change for me (healthy eating plan, starting meditation, seriously contemplating a move to another state) so I jumped at the chance to read an arc of this new self-help book written expressly for people over the age of 50 when I found an arc was available for request on NetGalley. It sounded like it might have something important to add to the changes I have been making in my own life. The word 'mindful' in the title especially caught my eye as I have been working on mindfulness in my daily meditation practice with the Headspace app (which I highly recommend.) Mindfulness is awareness of the present moment--living fully in that moment and not dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. Andrea Brandt has developed her strategies for mindful aging around a mindset she calls 'realistic positivity.'Some hard topics she tackles: negative thinking, regrets, breaking bad habits, letting go of what no longer serves you, coping with loss, illness and pain, and embracing your mortality. And on the positive side: empowering self-talk, creating a vision, living your dreams, having gratitude, being inspired by amazing role models, making essential connections with others, having sex at any age, enhancing your body, engaging your mind, expressing your creativity, stepping into the unknown, and developing your spiritual side.Brandt uses the personal life stories of inspiring people she has known to fully illustrate each topic and then she ends the chapter with strategies and worksheet exercises to help the reader delve deeply into their own life situation, hopefully enabling some positive changes. This is a book I believe I will come back to again and again for inspiration, taking more time with the exercises and being reminded to live in the present moment: "that the real purpose of life is to really live."
I’ve been thinking a lot about topics related to what I’d call “Healthy Living for Seniors,†which includes nutrition, exercise, positive attitude, and mindfulness. Frankly, I was spinning in circles, so I was particularly pleased to receive a copy of the new book Mindful Aging from PESI Publishing & Media and NetGalley in return for my honest review. The author, Andrea Brandt, a therapist in the Los Angeles area, says she has “… discovered that body-oriented therapy is the most effective treatment available today for people who seek to bring their inner world and external world into harmony…†I expected the book to expand on her thoughts about how a mindset she calls ‘realistic positivity can help the reader interested in incorporating mindfulness to their aging process. The blurb for the book promised to help me “throw out the old stereotypes about getting older and move toward the welcoming new evidence that your future is alive with possibility, providing steps to thrive today and into your golden years…†with “…tools to help …embrace a new mindset and blaze a new trail …fueled by passion, purpose, and creativity.†Since it also said it was full of tools and exercises, I was hooked, but wary with high expectations. Some of the chapter headings were particularly intriguing, including topics such as “letting go†(of things that aren’t working), “finding joy,†“expressing your creativity,†and “developing your spiritual side.†Each of the chapters includes the personal life stories of real people to expand on the topic, and then (best of all!) she provides strategies and worksheet exercises to help guide the reader toward a more mindful aging process.Included along the way are ways to cope with loss, embrace our mortality, deal with anger and/or negative thinking (all of which resonated with me), and become more positive in general.I found that including the stories and the exercises in each chapter was especially helpful. I’ve read a fair amount on the various topics covered in Mindful Aging, and some of the people wrote in a very “woo-woo†way (too much even for someone from Santa Cruz). This isn’t the case with Dr. Brandt – her style is accessible and the readability is excellent. Five stars.
This book literally changed my life! I cannot say enough good things about the way Andrea modified my thinking about what it means to "age". This easy-to-read book is filled with wonderful strategies to modify your mindset about your possibilities, and exercises to help you transform yourself now (and get ready for your future). There are meaningful real-life examples and fascinating resources to explore. Using the impetus provided by this book, I have joined a gym and made other lifestyle changes that I believe will allow me to age more mindfully.
