I'm thrilled to see readers getting another shot at Hazel Thornton's book on the Menendez Brothers, especially with new material included for the 20th anniversary, and now in a version for Kindle! I became interested in books about juror experiences during the highly televised Menendez brothers and O. J. Simpson cases, and was surprised that there didn't seem to be much readily available. All I could manage to find was a plethora of courtroom fiction, along with the occasional autobiographical volume by legal professionals using more technical jargon than I could handle. What I really wanted, was something that dealt with the unimaginable day to day struggles of someone who'd actually served on a jury.Finding Hazel Thornton's book was a revelation. What fascinated me most was that it was compiled from actual notes taken throughout her seven-month long experience. Her book records the journey of an eyewitness who attempted to process emotionally difficult, confusing, and often conflicting testimony, on a day to day basis. Thornton’s book gave me deeply personal insight into her experience as a juror; this was exactly what I'd been looking for, and I found it nearly impossible to put down. Now that an eight-part television series has been made about the case (Law & Order: True Crime, The Menendez Brothers) this book becomes even more important to those interested in the Menendez brothers themselves. The series not only completely vindicates Thornton's experience, but also brings to the public - for the first time - evidence that has been previously unavailable. Most importantly, it reveals the impetus behind the murders, and addresses the unspeakable horrors inflicted on the Menendez brothers by their parents, testimony which Thornton heard in the courtroom and addresses in her book.I am proud to say that many years later I discovered that my friend Hazel, an organizing professional in New Mexico, was the author of the book that had satisfied my curiosity. If you have even the slightest interest in this case, you owe it to yourself to read Hazel Thornton's book 'Hung Jury'. Although I am the proud owner of a signed paperback copy, I am excited to add the Kindle version to my library. Hung Jury: The Diary of a Menendez Juror
I'm about the same age as Eric Menendez (he's a month or so younger than me) so when all this was going on back then, it was gripping to watch people my age going through this. I wanted to read this book when I knew the Law and Order True Crime series was coming out, and to get ahead of it so that I could evaluate how accurate I thought the show was as it treated the story. Hung Jury was such an unique way to learn the story, not just of the murders and the trials, but of the perspective that so very few people had in their front row seats, with the decision-making responsibility they had. This book is its own type of historical non-fiction... even though on every page, you're still in disbelief that it is not actually fiction! If the trial or the story has become interesting to you because of watching Law and Order, you'll definitely appreciate this companion to it!
What a great book! I wasn’t able to put it down. Read it in less than 48 hours. If you don’t know some of the information surrounding the trial, charges and “characters†it may be a little hard to connect all of the dots, but if you have kept up with the facts of the case it is a great read.
The author gives an insightful view of being a juror in a high-profile trial. I wish more jurors thought this in depth when someone's life is on the line.
A very novel way of the relating the Menendez brothers’ trial from the viewpoint of one jurist’s diary. Did not bog down in legal information. A good read.
Being around the same age as Lyle and Erik Menendez, I was absolutely captivated by the first trial. I remember watching it every single day on Court TV back in the day. Like Hazel Thorton, I started out assuming what the prosecution alleged must be true...they killed for the money...but by the end, I was totally swayed by the defense's case. I came to the conclusion that the boys had been abused for all of their lives and were in imminent fear the night they shot their parents. I came to my decision not necessarily based on emotion, but rather very methodically and rationally, having payed close attention to the totality of the evidence presented. For years I avoided reading ANY books about the case because I was devastated when they were convicted the second time around, and I didn't want to read any salacious books that twisted the actual evidence to fit the "greed" narrative when the actuality was so much more complex. I saw how writers like Dominick Dunne were able to do to twist the facts of this case and sway public opinion and I wanted no part of that.It wasn't until the recent coverage of the case came to pass that Hazel's book came onto my radar. I kept hearing so many positive things about it in the national conversation so I decided to give it a try and was not disappointed. Ms. Thornton has written a compelling first-hand account of what it was like to be in that jury box and just how seriously they all took their duty. She reached her own conclusions (manslaughter 1) in a very intelligent and diligent manner and as much as the outcome wasn't what I had hoped for, she restored my faith in the jury system. The second half of the book takes Hazel's observations and commentary and compares them against assumptions we make about the jury system in this country. It is truly enlightening because as much as we like to think a jury of one's peers is the best system in the world, it is far from perfectand very vulnerable to preconceived notions and prejudices. I think the Menendez case is a perfect example of the fallibility of our judicial system as it was very hard (and uncomfortable) for the male jurors on Erik's case to conceive of a father molesting his sons (whereas if they would have been daughters, there's no doubt in my mind those men would have voted manslaughter). If you have read nothing else about this case - READ THIS BOOK. This is not a juror selling their story for money or their 15 minutes of fame. These are authentic notes for herself that she never even thought would ever reach the light of day. Her book is honest, authentic, tragic, and still uplifting. You will not be disappointed!
I have a whole new perspective on the justice system now. Hazel's writing is so good, I felt frustrated for her and with her. Hazel's ability to analyze the facts of the case and to step back and analyze the behavior of her fellow jurors, makes the story of her experience as a juror on such a high profile case more compelling.
