The Good News:+ the author really knows his stuff and is something of a perfectionistThe Bad News:- time marches on, although the book is "just" 4 years old, Photoshop CS4 (basis for this book) seem ancient (relative to current Photoshop CC). When the book was written it was not possible to comment on the capabilities of the tools of PS as it exists today. There might be better / different / more efficient ways to accomplish same results using newer versions of PS and newer tools (compared to what was available when this was written).- many plug ins mentioned are a) Windows based only, b) pretty ancient and not being updated, or both.
This book covers all of the bases for restoring faded, scratched, moldy, dirty and torn photos, negatives and slides. From the basics of scanning(getting the photo or negative into your computer) to all of the tools of restoration you will probably find an answer here. Although much of the book uses Photoshop tools and plugins he also introduces less expensive yet capable software such as Picture Window Pro. As an amateur photographer with a limited budget interested in restoring and preserving precious family photos I couldn't justify the purchase of the $600+ Photoshop package. I tried Photoshop Elements which was OK at the beginning but I soon ran into its limitations. It was Ctein who introduced me to the benefits of using software with full 16-bit vs. 8-bit image editing. Ctein often gives several methods of approaching restoration. Here I discovered Picture Window Pro which, at $89.95 is much more affordable than Adobe's flagship, Photoshop. The book, although softbound, is rugged enough to withstand being carried everywhere in my backpack for over 6 months, to be read at leisure on the train or in waiting rooms. I can't recommend this work strongly enough. Buy it!
I am currently reading the book authored by Ctein. I did not know it was written in the Adobe Photoshop CS4 time frame when I purchased it but there is still a lot of good information to help one restore photographs of the past. The author covers the tools needed, both hardware and software, as well as the procedures used by the author to restore photographs. For me, it was well worth the money I paid.
This is one of the best photo restoration instructional books.It covers both Photoshop CC and Photoshop Elements.Very aware of current software tools. Recommends a number of PS Elements addons, including one that enables 16 bit editing.
I wish I knew about this book when I got started in this field. I was, and am, an expert in Photoshop, and assumed that and a lot of experience on a high-end scanner would be more than enough knowledge to take me anywhere I had to go. Wrong! Some of the best advice here is counter-intuitive, and I'd have spent less time up blind alleys if I'd known some of the stuff in the very first chapter!Biggest problem with the info presented here has nothing to do with Ctein-- it's that some of the essential software he uses for the book hasn't been updated to run under newer OS versions. But this edition does a decent job of updating the first edition, and I'll be buying the third the minute he gets done with it.
Great book if you really want to dig in digital restoration of old photos. This book is packed with information on how to tackle jobs that you will probably never encounter, but if you do, it will help you fix them. From really washed out photos to dull and yellowish photos, damaged photos with really deep scratches, and so on. You can read it from start to finish, or just go to the guide in the beginning of the book, which will show you a damaged photo you can compare with what you have, and then take you directly to the page that tackles the problem. The book will show you the tools in Photoshop that will help you with whatever problem you might encounter. I really think I made and excellent purchase and I highly recommend it.
Once I started reading this book I had difficulty putting it down until I had finished it. It was so interesting to read how it would be possible to transform sometimes hopeless looking photos into beautiful photographs. It explains a lot about masking & curves adjustments & I feel that this book will be my restoration bible. Since I've had a computer less than a year & Photoshop for a few months, I didn't understand a lot of what I was reading, so I don't know if this should be a beginners first restoration book. It provides a sophisticated approach to digital photo restoration from scan to print.
Great Book, wonderful ideas, with step by step instructions from the man who is obviously the Father of Digital correction. Delivered in a timely manner with a nice hefty price tag for a paper back book, I found it fascinating and it has become one of my favorite books when I sit down to look at my Grandmother's, my Mother's and my photo work that cover (in total) a period of almost one hundred years. This guy is a never ending source of inspiration, as well. Thank You.
