You'd think a book titled what this is would be much funnier and way more fun than what's delivered here. Unfortunately, it's got all the humor of your uptight grandma if your uptight grandma took Margaret Atwood, Orange is The New Black, and Tumblr as their gospel truth. What sucks is that it brings down something that really could've been kind of fun. Instead, it's so little fun that I can't help but remember that Alex De Campi already did this story with more humor and a better implementation of the theme back in her Grindhouse series. So, if you think this is just a Sci-Fi Longest yard rip off, you're actually getting another rip off in the process. It's a steal.Besides this book being really predictable, condescending, and racist (I'll get to that in a bit), I can say the visual teams were on point. Rian Hughes does some great design work on the book and on the covers. Certain areas seem like they were lade out be him. Valentine De Landro doesn't skimp on panels and adds a lot of character to what seems like simply taking it from the words...a pretty flat and one dimensional story about how all boys are evil and how white people are all evil including probably the women, which is comic since it's written by a white woman, has at least one white man in Hughes working on it, and there's a black man in Di Landro involved making the whole creative team evil on a gender or racial identity level.I've been pretty down on this book and I'll say that at first I thought that it was me misreading the intent. It was really just a really preachy South Park episode. I then got to the back where it has a discussion guide filled with leading questions all related to the terrible writing and nothing to do with the spectacular teams that made the book at least look good. Instead, I get to see hilarious questions beating around the bush as to whether I check my privilege or not. Also, there's not a single non-white or for that matter white character that isn't a frankly offensive stereotype that if this book had been written by Bill O'Reilly wouldn't have been rightly called out. I'm mixed race and frankly I find the writer to be a exactly the kind of privileged racist woman this book screams about. Hopefully that'll make it into the next discussion guide.*Disclaimer* - Don't put the title of this book in your review. Amazon will flag it. Hopefully, they aren't flagging it cause I'm calling out the writer for writing racist trash. Either way, I hate this book enough to go in re-post having removed the title. SO GOOD! I read the whole thing in two sittings and it had me at the edge of my seat for most of the time. It's got such complexity and depth, as well as a few mysterious subplots. After I finished it I immediately bought volume 2! I'm not even really a fan of comics/graphic novels, but this one had me hooked from the first few pages. One of my guy friends read it in a women's studies class and he loved it too. I'd recommend to everyone!
This was a fantastic book. I'm not much of a comics reader, but I couldn't look away. It was an interesting blend of futuristic technology with old-fashioned, discriminatory values. It was realistic enough to be pretty disturbing.Don't forget to read the fake advertisements at the ends of each section. The text is a little small, but they take a sarcastic look at various products and services that can help make someone a "better woman", according to the standards of the settings.There is violent content and depictions of discrimination that could be hard to read. You might want to do some research on the story if you think this could be a barrier to your enjoyment of the book.
This comic is spirited, sharply written, pays just the right amount of homage to classic exploitation movies, politically fierce with an inclusive cast of characters, and sets the foundation for what appears will be an awesome story. Like many intro books, we get a lot thrown at us in the first installment, but I am willing to have faith that the characters and story will continue to develop. I can’t wait to continue the story.
Very great comic book, if feminist theories and such don't offend you definitely get this book. It's very well written and I'm looking forward to reading more of this series. This book actually encourages thinking/discussion on topics such as intersectional feminism and how non compliance in the book relates to real life.
This was an amazing read. Not only is the artwork beautiful, but the story itself is mesmerizing. To take a topic, such as feminism and the treatment of women, and put it in a futuristic and dystopian setting like this one is a masterful strike. Thus should be read by everyone who considers themselves a feminist.
This was a great book. A dystopian future where women are second class citizens and men are in charge. The only down-side is there is so much time spent in the prison, that the entire society is sort of not depicted which I would like to see more of. There usually is something good about even the worst regimes, and while it is tough to see that reflected here. Characters are well-defined, and while the art is not the best I've seen it is evocative and fits the story. The characters are ones you definitely root for.
Really excellent writing and ideas, great for the bleak but snarky feminist in your life! POC are main characters, well-developed and each one unique as a person, which made me very happy.
Where women can be jailed for their skin color or size, Bitch Planet is their new home. Killed indiscriminately and with little power to fight the guards, they will organize and try to fight back.
