Then you definitely shouldn’t: drop it from a bridge, send it aloft with balloons, or ‘play ding dong ditch’ with it (all illustrated with wry understatement). Instead, the narrator offers some incredibly important do’s: put the fruit tree ‘in a sunny spot’ (the grassy verge between sidewalk and street), don’t overwater it, and ‘battle against intruders’ who seem to come from all directions. After nearly a year of caring for her reluctantly received sapling, the protagonist joyously picks her lush lemons, and Grandma even returns to help make some fresh lemonade, the sale of which leads to more plants for her burgeoning garden. Jamie L. B. Deenihan is a teacher and picture book author who lives with her husband and two children in Suffield, Connecticut. When Grandma Gives You a Lemon Tree is her first picture book. I've excitedly anticipated this book's arrival on my doorstep and I am so in love with it. The bright and colorful cover is so inviting and is followed by art on every page that adds to the humor and heart of a fun story. My kids and I have loved studying the endpapers and interior art and talking about the details that add to the story. The high-quality design and production includes great printing on quality paper and satisfying spot gloss on the jacket. A real book-shelf treasure!Through the story and author's note, this book can be a great springboard for talking about the lemons in our life, and how, through hard work and the support of a loving community, we can turn them into...lemonade. This is one I won't mind reading to my children and students again and again.
This debut book by Jamie L. B. Deenihan is hilarious and heartwarming. She takes the second person POV in an entire new level with a character and plot that's relatable and fun. The whimsical illustrations paired with carefully chosen words make this the kind of book you'll want to re-read. I also love how Jamie Deenihan expertly inserts the best kind of character arc-the MC goes from Lemon Tree skeptic to garden enthusiast in a satisfying progression that makes sense.
First off the colors of the cover are the first thing that draw you to the book! The cover is so colorful and inviting and who doesn’t love a story about gramma? Then you open the book and every page is filled with so much detail that you just stare at the pages and don’t want to turn to the next because you are afraid you might miss a small added detail! The story, what a fun and creative story! It is funny and an important life lesson especially today. To appreciate the little simple things in life because they can give you so much more fulfillment! Jamie and Lorraine made a great pairing on this picture book!
Jamie's debut book is outstanding! As a mom and a gardener, there's a lot to love about this story of a little girl who gets a lemon tree on her birthday. This was not on her birthday wish list, but as fate would have it, that lemon tree offered more than lemons once it was accepted, fed, protected and loved. This is a book you'll want to keep and share so get at least a couple of copies. The illustrations are bright and cute and Jamie's story telling is clever and fun! My family loves When Grandma Gives a Lemon Tree!
This book is a delight! The upbeat text speaks directly to the reader, and the gorgeous and colorful illustrations carry you from page to page. The story about patience & tending to and nurturing the things you care about is timeless and important. I'm gifting this book to all the kids in my life!
