I genuinely enjoyed this book. It was, I feel, a very respectful breakdown between major religions and biblical Christianity. The author never once "bashed" another religion for being different from biblical Christianity and that was incredibly refreshing since that is often what happens in books that disagree with other religious beliefs. This book was not exhaustive though, which seemed to be a complaint from other reviewers. I think Mr. Ridenour wrote it to give a cursory glance at the differences between various religions and biblical Christianity; I feel it is intended as a jumping off point for people who want to know more about the differences, but don't have much knowledge of where to begin. My family and I read this book together as a way to gain some more knowledge about religions that were different from ours and how to approach conversations with those individuals while still being respectful. Mr. Ridenour really did a good job of staying respectful while highlighting the differences in a manner that made sense and wasn't "out of reach" for a layperson who didn't have any background knowledge or very minimal background knowledge. The book broke each religion down based on its history, its teachings, and then how those teachings differ from biblical Christianity. Like I already mentioned, it is a great starting point, but certainly isn't exhaustive.
If you are considering this book, you are probably looking to objectively understand how other people think / believe. If so, look elsewhere.Sample quote, p. 76: "It's no wonder that Mohammed developed theologically flawed ideas." Nearly every chapter contains messages similar to this, explaining why every religion he discusses is wrong.
I purchased the book thinking it would be a thoughtful and heartfelt review of comparative theology. Instead I discovered a one-sided condemnation of any faith or belief system that did not already comport to his absolutist, evangelical and literalist view of externalized Christianity. In retrospect I should have paid more attention to his background as an echo chamber for followers who would rather park their God-given brains to enable them cognitive closure to the essential questions religion tries to address. It asserts that the mysteries of faith in other religious traditions prove their comparative lack of worth, even to the point of cult status without applying the same academic rigor to his path. “Do not judge, so that you will not be judged, since you will be judged in the same judgment that you make, and you will be measured by the same standard you apply.â€
Nicely written book. Fritz seems to have a grasp of the religions he is introducing, if elementary. Unfortunately, it is introduced as an objective reference for those interested in comparative religion and almost unabashedly preaches evangelical Christianity as superior to all other religions. After deconstructing and then hinting at Islam’s inferiority he states “Christians have incredibly good news to share with Muslims who are willing to listenâ€. At nearly every opportunity Ridenour proselytizes his reader - discreetly, as if it were unintentional (but he knows what he’s doing). No biggie if we had been made aware that his attempt at Comparative Religion was really meant to be a soapbox. It unfortunately calls into question the material and makes one wonder if he was genuinely presenting historical/analytical information or his own synopsis, warped by a Christian lense.
Ok, I really enjoyed this book. I’ve always wondered what other religions are based on and if there’s any truth to them. I am a Christian and believe Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven. This book re-enforces true Christian doctrine and information how other religions were founded.
I believe this is a great resource if you want to learn more about other world religions. If you want to learn even more than this book communicates, I recommend reading the Koran, and book of Mormon as well. I am sure there are other religious books. It has always amazed me how people who label themselves as a certain faith really do not fully understand their own foundational beliefs. Who knows? After reading this book, you may know more about other religions than the people who claim those religions as their own.
This book is outstanding. It was originally purchased as a requirement for a college class. However, I find that I often refer to it and brush up on my world religions knowledge.
Have a copy of the first edition and prefer it to this version because of the illustrations.
